When was the first email sent?

E-mail was actually used long before the Internet was created in 1981. It started in 1965 as a method by which users on a main computer could communicate with each other. Later it was made so that you could send messages to users on other servers. E-mails were then sent via the UUCP protocol while e-mails are predominantly delivered via SMTP today.
