Burkina Faso is a country in West Africa, bordering Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The country's capital is Ouagadougou. Its size is 274,200 square kilometres with an estimated population of around 16 million. The area was colonized by the French in the 1890s when the native Mossi were defeated. The country gained independence in 1960 and has since seen a variety of regimes. Today, the country is a semi-presidential republic. Until 1984 the country was known as the Republic of Upper Volta.
