Muhammad Ali Pasha of Egypt gave the giraffe Zarafa to Charles X of France in 1827. Zarafa spent 18 years in Jardin des Plantes in Paris and was amongst the first three giraffes in Europe and the first to arrive since the Medici giraffe was sent to Lorenzo de Medici in Florence in 1486 - some 300 years earlier.
