Hanoi or Ha Noi has been the capital of Vietnam since 1976 and was the capital of North Vietnam from 1954 to 1976. The city is located on the right (southwest) bank of the Red River on a river bed in north Vietnam. The city has many buildings from the period 1887-1940 when it was the capital of French Indochina.
