Second Life (SL) is a privately owned, online virtual world, developed and run by Linden Lab. It is also known as The Grid. Unlike other online worlds, SL has its own economy - the currency is called Linden dollars, and the users can both sell and buy Linden dollars for real dollars. Several companies, but also countries, have opened branches and representations on SL. The Maldives was the first country to open an embassy on SL. More countries, including Sweden, have since followed.
