Correct answer

Water

Explanation

A moat is a dug ditch filled with water that surrounds a castle, a fortress or a town. In Medieval times you dug these canals to defend yourself against enemies who wanted to attack. They could be up to 40 metres wide and filled with water, and often they would have a drawbridge so that you could control who could enter.
